About Blue Heron Quilts

I believe quilts represent the best of us.
Quilts document our resourcefulness and creativity, cultural traditions and innovations.
They perpetuate true craftsmanship and handwork in a world of mechanical mass production.
They are timeless, comforting, personal works of art. Simply, the act of quilting makes me like myself.

I am Kelly Korman, proud owner and quilter of Blue Heron Quilts.

I began quilting in 2021, during the pandemic, inspired to learn how to sew. I had been knitting for almost 20 years and was ready to learn a new skill that seemed to have endless possibilities and practicalities. I made my first little quilt for my cats, watched them curl up in complete bliss, and the rest is history. Whether it’s a cold pack filled with rice and lavender, a quilt for a new baby, or a simple whole cloth quilt for a friend, watching those I love use and enjoy the items I sew for them is incredibly fulfilling. A quilt coming together in all of its iterations and layers gives me a true feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction. Sewing binding by hand puts me in a state of complete zen.

Quilting is a passion project for me. I work full-time as an organic farm and livestock certification specialist, and it is through my work in agriculture that I have come to deeply appreciate materials derived from Earth, including natural dyes. I work with bits of cotton, linen, hemp and silk from diverse sources, whether it be scraps from fellow quilters, old clothing, or artfully hand-dyed cotton from independent dyers.

The quilts I create are inspired by all sorts of things - the natural Florida flora and fauna around me, the way the light glimmers on water, my parents’ bougainvillea, even traditional quilt blocks. I do not consider myself a modern quilter nor a traditional quilter, but rather a quilter inspired by color and texture, history and the present, open to possibilities. I also repurpose vintage cutter quilts into usable items and enjoy giving them new life.

This website is intended to serve as a documentation of my work as well as an invitation to collaborate if you’d like a one-of-a-kind quilt that we envision together. Thank you for visiting.
